Het was een opmerkelijke advertentie, pontificaal opgenomen tussen de overlijdensberichten in de Nederlandse kranten op 26 januari 2002. 'In memoriam dr. Menno ter Braak,' stond er, 'geboren te Eibergen 26-01-1902, overleden in Den Haag 14-05-1940.' Eenvoudige, anonieme woorden die bewijzen dat Ter Braak, een van de meest toonaangevende intellectuelen van het interbellum, ruim zestig jaar na zijn overlijden nog lang niet dood is. De historicus Léon Hanssen beschreef het leven van Ter Braak enkele jaren geleden in twee veelgeroemde, vuistdikke biografieën, die hij nu heeft teruggebracht tot een beknopte handelseditie in één band. Hanssens studie is voorbeeldig, een klassiek detectiveverhaal bijna, waarvan de tragische afloop - Ter Braaks zelfmoord kort na het Duitse bombardement op Rotterdam en de daaropvolgende capitulatie van Nederland - al vaststaat, en waarin het antwoord op de vraag hoe het zo ver heeft kunnen komen hoofdstuk na hoofdstuk zorgvuldig wordt opgebouwd.

Contemporain de Colomb et de Savonarole, de Luther et de Rabelais, Érasme est à la fois un enfant du Moyen Age et l'un des fondateurs du monde moderne. Ce Hollandais, né à Rotterdam sans doute en 1469, est mort à Bâle en 1536, après avoir vécu à Paris, à Louvain, à Londres, à Rome. Outre l'"Éloge de la Folie" et les "Colloques", qui suffiraient à sa gloire, il a écrit de nombreux ouvrages et, par eux, a participé aux grands combats intellectuels et spirituels de la Renaissance : humanisme, pacifisme, réforme religieuse. Personnage complexe, inépuisable et passionnant qui toujours et partout a fait front, Érasme nous paraît aujourd'hui d'une étonnante modernité. Sa correspondance - aussi riche que celle de Voltaire - nous montre un épistolier plein de verve, alternant érudition et fantaisie, satire et tendresse. Épris de liberté, il prend volontiers le parti des humbles ou des persécutés. Sa tolérance a choqué ses contemporains : c'est bien pourquoi elle nous ravit.

This booklet is an essay at the interface of philosophy and complexity research, trying to inspire the reader with new ideas and new conceptual developments of cellular automata.  Going beyond the numerical experiments of Steven Wolfram, it is argued that cellular automata must be considered complex dynamical systems in their own right, requiring appropriate analytical models in order to find precise answers and predictions in the universe of cellular automata.  Indeed, eventually we have to ask whether cellular automata can be considered models of the real world and, conversely, whether there are limits to our modern approach of attributing the world, and the universe for that matter, essentially a digital reality.
